People Don’t Subscribe to Newsletters. They Subscribe to Value.

Nobody Wakes Up Hoping to Join Your Email List

Let’s be honest.

Nobody wakes up thinking, “I really hope I find another email newsletter to subscribe to today.”

Most of us already have inboxes full of promotions, updates, and newsletters we forgot we signed up for years ago. That’s why getting people to hand over their email address can feel so difficult. You’re not just asking someone to fill out a form; you’re asking them to make room for you in a space that’s already crowded.

We’ve been building two different email campaigns recently, and one thing became clear almost immediately. Businesses spend a lot of time thinking about how to get people to sign up and not nearly enough time thinking about why someone would want to.

Give People a Reason

One of the campaigns we’re building is for a tourism organization. Like most destinations, they have plenty to talk about. Local events. Restaurants. Attractions. Weekend trip ideas. Seasonal activities.

The challenge wasn’t coming up with content.

The challenge was getting the right people interested enough to hear it.

Instead of simply asking people to “Sign up for our newsletter,” we took a different approach. We’re partnering with a local business to offer a prize that makes sense for someone interested in visiting the area. It isn’t just another gift card or some random giveaway. It’s something that represents the destination itself.

That matters more than people realize.

A person who signs up because they’re interested in experiencing your community is much more likely to care about your future emails than someone who just wanted the chance to win cash.

Bigger Isn't Always Better

It’s easy to get caught up in the numbers.

More subscribers sounds like success, but a bigger email list doesn’t automatically mean better results. If the people joining your list aren’t interested in what you have to offer, they’ll stop opening your emails, stop clicking your links, or unsubscribe altogether.

A smaller list filled with people who genuinely care about your business will almost always outperform a massive list built around the wrong incentive.

That’s why the incentive matters.

It isn’t just there to encourage someone to sign up. It helps attract the kind of audience you want to keep talking to long after the giveaway ends.

Think Beyond the Signup Form

The giveaway gets someone’s attention, but it isn’t what keeps them around.

Once they’ve subscribed, every email is another opportunity to prove they made the right decision. Fill your email campaigns with Helpful information, local recommendations, upcoming events, and maybe even more promotional campaigns that are relevant to your area.

That’s what builds trust over time.

Your signup form shouldn’t be asking, “Can we have your email address?”

It should be answering the question, “Why would someone want to hear from us in the first place?”

When you start there, growing an email list becomes a lot less about collecting addresses and a lot more about building an audience that’s actually interested in what you have to say.

Because nobody wants more email; they want email that’s worth opening.
